Reduce chronic absenteeism at TPS in the McClain High School Feeder pattern by establishing the Tulsa Resciliency Investment Fund, TRIF.
Poverty is the root cause of almost all of our social problems and the driver of chronic absenteeism. The TRIF addresses chronic absenteeism at its roots... poverty, through guaranteed basic income, GBI, for 300 families caring for children and youth at risk of chronic absenteeism and unaccompanied youth.
14,000 kids are classified as chronically absent at TPS. Over 4,000 of those are in the McClain feeder pattern. 2,400 are children, PreK-6th grade.
TPS has had success in reducing chronic absenteeism by alleviating the effects of poverty and has spent tens of millions of dollars in the process. That money could have been spent on improving classroom instruction.
Tulsa has created the conditions for chronic absenteeism. Poverty is a policy choice. Economic institutions have exploited the poor. Our society through prejudice, segregation, and racism has enforced poverty. We have to step up!
Create the political will by Council and the administration to establish the TRIF !
